Parenting Expert Offers Advice To Foster Parents At National Conference In Atlanta, May 12-16 Dr. Nancy Buck Says Foster Parents are 'Angels on Eart

Charlestown, R.I. (PRWEB) May 2, 2008 -- Dr. Nancy Buck will offer advice to foster parents, professionals and children during the National Foster Parent Association (NFPA) (www.nfpa.inc.org) 38th Annual Education Conference, Sheraton Atlanta Hotel, May 12-16.

Dr. Buck will speak at the following sessions:

? 5/15 from 8-11 a.m. on "Why Do Kids Act That Way & How Can I Get Them to Stop."

? 5/16 from 2:30 - 4 p.m. on "Healthy Habits - The Well-Balanced Mental Health Meal."

According to Buck, whose Peaceful Parenting® technique derives from the "Choice Theory" developed by the psychiatrist Dr. William Glasser, foster kids have some unique needs which make it challenging, but rewarding to be a foster parent.

For example:

1.Some kids just don't bond with their foster parents. They may even become frightened, so it is very important that foster parents focus on making the child feel safe.

2.Siblings are often not placed in the same foster home, so it is important that they can stay connected via e-mail, text messaging or cell phone.

3.At the age of 18, the state says the child is on its own. If the child is not ready to be independent, foster parents can continue the relationship as "god parents," even if they are no longer the legal guardians.

"Foster parents are angels on earth for opening up their homes to the thousands of children who so desperately need a safe and loving place to live," says Buck. "We should celebrate them all year long, but especially during National Foster Care Month." (www.fostercaremonth.org).

Peaceful Parenting posits that children are internally motivated by the genetic instructions for safety, love, power, fun and freedom. Buck teaches parents how to decode their child's internal motivations so they can lovingly guide them from birth into young adulthood when they are mature enough to make it on their own.

Nancy Buck is the author of Peaceful Parenting and her second book, Why Do Kids Act That Way, will be released in the Fall of 2008. She completed her Ph.D. in developmental psychology with a specialization in parenting at The Union Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio and has a master of arts in counselor education from the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I. Dr. Buck is one of 13 distinguished NFPA speaker bureau members. For more information about Dr. Buck, visit www.peacefulparenting.com or call 401-662-5788.
